Weddings

This last week has been filled up with all sorts. We finally got a massive storm in the south that has coated the peaks. Town has all of a sudden come alive, with people flocking in from all over for fresh snow.

Karl gave me a call the other day and asked if I was keen to go for a quick fly down the southern lakes which I couldn’t say no to on such a nice day.

Friends of mine, Tim and Paula, got married on Saturday. I covered the photography side of things for their big day. It was right in one of the biggest storms of the year. It was raining and sleeting the whole day, which made things very challenging, but luckily a fellow photographer Miles Holden that does a lot of weddings around Queenstown suggested a few good locations for rainy days.

Transfer hard cover just hit the shelf in Australia and should be distributed throughout NZ soon. Its definitely one of the best issues to come out. It’s so nice to have it bound in a hard cover and printed on quality paper. All the content is from NZ or Aus. I put a lot of work into this issue and cover the NZ team in the Photo Battle, the Fox Glacier story and have a few images in the photos of the year. Below are a few snaps of my work.

Wedding Season

It’s that time of the year, the wedding season. My brother has just got married. So the last few weeks have been crazy. I came back to home to help with getting the wedding ready before heading to Minnesota, USA to shoot a story then on to other trips that I’m sure I’ll be posting up here at some stage.  I never realized how much is involved in preparing a wedding and this wedding wasn’t really a small one.

First us groomsmen had to get some seafood for the caterers - good excuse to get away from all the fuss on land as well. So we spent a bit of time out there the first week back, getting tuna, crayfish and paua.

The Tuna we got, good in noodles with a bit of chili sauce or in Sushi.

This is Bear Island, on the other side is where all the crayfish are.

Got me a goodie

Heading out to pick up the cray pots as the first light comes up.

Plenty of meat on this guy - you need a lot when you have to feed 160 people.

Bit of lunch out on the boat before heading in.

We got a helli flight in from the beach to my parents’ house before getting a flight to the wedding venue just up the road. I was one of the groomsmen so couldn’t muck around with my camera too much but managed to take a few snaps before we arrived at the wedding.

The Groomsman’s flying in from he beach, its go time. This is when there were a few nerves starting to gather

This is the venue. Mike Toogood, Annabel’s father has a stunning place just out of Havelock North. It was the perfect place for my brother Rowan and Annabel his new wife to get married.

The final touch.

The coffee table and travelling with flash

I just got back to the mother land and slumped into a chair after being in transit, which is always quite draining, and was stoked to find a few early Christmas surprises on the coffee table.

MONS ROYALE

Mons Royale had sent me down some new product to try out. They are a new underwear and base layer company that produces stylish new age garments that are 100% merino wool. As a photographer I can be sitting around in the back country for hours on end waiting for the right light etc and this is the kind of gear you need. Thanks Mons Royale.

MANUAL MAGAZINE

I spent some time crewing the streets of Queenstown with Sam Hanna at the end of last winter. He has been skating hard and killing it. Manual also turned up on the coffee table, and had a few shots I had taken in the Sammy interview. Go check it out

FLYING WITH STROBES

I am going to be hopping on a plan to the States in a couple of weeks with some large flash equipment. There are a few things you need to take into consideration before getting on a plane with this gear so you don’t end up being classed as a terrorist and getting in a whole lot of trouble far from home. Because you are carrying a generator the size of a car battery with cords inside a large black box it can look a little sketchy to the xray guys and customs officers.

There are a few things you can carry with you to make this part of your travel flow with not too much trouble. For the full rundown on what you need cheek out Dan Carr’s blog. But pretty much you need to take the fuse from the battery out, and print out IATA specifications from your manual, and a copy of the non dangerous goods sheet based on UN recommendations for lead-acid batteries. Its good to keep a copy on you, and a copy in with the flash equipment in case you are transferring and will not be with your gear.

Merry Christmas  everyone. I hope you’re having a great time. Sit back relax and have a beer. I hope you all have an exciting and prosperous 2010.

New Lens Baby!!

IMG_8775

I have just recently had a birthday and was stoked when a lens baby turned up on the door step. I have wanted a tilt shift  lens for a while but haven’t been able to justify getting one in my field of photography as I didn’t know how much I would use it. After having a play around I can see myself having a lot of fun with my new lens. It’s quite tricky to work and this is one of the easier series to operate but I can see the potential for some very interesting images being captured.

I went out the other day and had my first play with it. Here are a few snaps from the Composer lens.

I took these photos from Bluff Hill in Hawkes Bay looking down on the port as all the workers were unloading the ships. They are massive machines they use but they look so small from way up there.

These two were shots were taken in the hills not far from my place. It’s a really nice place to chill out before I make my next plans.

Interior design

I have just got back from Turoa, after a busy week shooting a 2010 outerwear range. I had a new assignment covering some work for a new interior design company. It was challenging but a fun experience shooting interiors after shooting portraits and action photography the last week, which are all very different. Here is some of  Monica Weallean’s latest work from around Hawkes Bay.

The white furniture Monica uses in her designs is very predominant in her style.

Monica also works with the exteriors as well, creating a modern look by dressing the exterior with window treatments.
